Jane Austen is one of Southampton's most famous literary figures, who lived in the city from 1806-1809. It's her 250th birthday this December!
Come and celebrate with Dr Gillian Dow, from the English department, and Asha Parekh, student intern. You will explore how Austen is read in languages all over the world. You will hear from Dr Dow about the role of translation in Austen's international fame, and investigate a selection of worldwide translations of her most famous novel, Pride and Prejudice.
Together, we will think of the themes in Austen's novel. Is it all about Romance? What does 'Pride' and 'Prejudice' mean, and how might these words be communicated to prospective readers through cover images on different translations? If you speak a second language at home, or are learning one at school, bring along your expert knowledge!
In the second half of the workshop, you will get the chance to design your very own Pride and Prejudice book cover, using any knowledge you have of other languages.
At the end of the session, you can put your book cover on Jane Austen's Bookshelf. We will compare the covers and discuss how they might be interpreted by readers around the globe, with prizes for the best designs!
